Mapping (as) Resistance: Decolonizing↔Indigenizing Journalistic Cartography

This article considers journalistic cartography in relation to socioecological disasters Indigenous territories and associated resistance movements. The authority of Western-style maps as presented news media elsewhere is often taken for granted—colonial exerts powerful, typically unquestioned, influence upon peoples’ understandings cultural geographies land-based relationships. Such dynamics are particularly germane consideration environmental territorial concerns actions across Turtle Island / North America around the world. I present mapping traditions contemporary cartographic interventions inspiring counterexamples shifting public narratives understanding territories, knowledge, related issues within beyond.
